A splash colored silkie hen

Chickpics

Hello! I'm a chicken hobbyist who keeps silkie chickens and posts pictures of them on Twitter. This carrd is to provide a little extra info to those curious.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What kind of chickens are these?
A: I have three pens at the moment. Silkies, Plymouth rocks, and some tiny bantams. The silkies are assorted colors and make up most of my birds. I have the Plymouth rocks for my rescue rooster, Bramble. The tiny bantams are old English game bantams, a Japanese bantam roo, and bantam mixes.
Q: Why chickens?
A: They are a completely domesticated animal more than suitable for being a pet. I have found that they are intelligent, friendly, social, and loving animals that seek out companionship with humans. I understand them and they understand me.
Q: Do you eat your chickens?
A: No, these are pets, and I don't like to have discussions about that, even jokingly.
Q: Are you a breeder?
A: No, but I'll occasionally hatch eggs to add to my flock and sell extras. I focus on silkies or small bantams, so birds that can easily live in pairs or trios. I don't like contributing to unwanted roosters.
Q: Why is there a chicken inside your house? Don't you know that you're going to get salmonella?
A:
Sparkle and Dee are both additional needs and belong indoors for their safety. I'll also have birds inside to QT or if they are babies.
While salmonella is present in animal feces (including dog, cat, and human) my birds are not infected with salmonella. I keep them and their spaces clean, they aren't any more dirty than any other house pet.
Q: Can I ask you something about chicken care?
A: Absolutely! I love to help people with their chickens. Please join my discord so we can communicate quickly and easily or DM me there. Twitter is a mess and I don't always get Twitter DMs.
Q: You are doing [XYZ] wrong!
A: I don't want any criticisms unless I ask for them. I may do a few things differently from a lot of chicken keepers but I am not uneducated. If you genuinely want to know why I do something a certain way come ask me on my discord. Thanks for understanding!
